Description: In 1863, during the American Civil War,Abraham Lincoln asserted that "Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth." Following his tenure in the White House after reconstruction, former President Rutherford B. Hays stated that “This is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people no longer.” The north and the federal government in D.C. had won the Civil War, yet in many ways the south had won Reconstruction. In this engaging presentation, the triumphs and failures of Reconstruction will be explored, including enduring myths and changing perceptions that made “These United States” into “The United States.” Teachers will receive materials to help them teach Florida Social Studies Standards involving Reconstruction, including primary sources.
